Sons of Silver has always known how to rock; they can kick ass with the best of them. But what their latest one, “Dreaming Dangerous,” reminds us is that they understand the rock and roll fundamentals perfectly. It shouldn’t be something that even needs to be commented on, but with more and more bands just trying to impress with volume and velocity, trying to fit in as many notes per solo or trying to break the land speed record for the kick drum, a band that understands the golden equation, muscle + melody = rock and roll groove, comes as a welcome relief.
I know that equations might not be everyone’s bag, but there is also another one at work here: ebb + flow = dynamic! That is to say, if you are clever enough to head down into more understated lulls, the distance back up to the crescendo moments is even more explosive, even more impressive, even more…well, more!
Okay, enough of the math(s); essentially, here is a band that knows that big riffs, pummelling drums, depth charge bass and all the rest are great, but they work best when framed by space and atmosphere, when used sparingly and in the precise context. Sons of Silver also know that impressive playing might draw the listener in for four minutes and twenty-nine seconds, but it is those grooves and melodies, hooks and harmonies, strut and sass, fist-in-the-air singalongability that turn them into lifelong fans.
