Sons of Silver - Runaway Emotions (4L Entertainment)

12 January 2025

Any album that kicks off with a song that sounds like the bastard offspring of New York Dolls is always going to sit well with me. And it is that snarling blend of groove and grind, in the form of “Tell Me This,” that greets us as we drop the needle on Runaway Emotions, the debut album from Sons of Silver.

Now, this is a band that I assumed had been around for a while and would already have numerous albums to their name. It is not the case, but perhaps their ability to absorb all the best bits of rock and roll past makes them feel familiar whilst not losing their ability to write some new sonic chapters of their chosen genre’s story. And that is what we get: a reminder of all the best bits of the past rolled up into a forward-thinking rock leviathan. not just that, a rock and roll leviathan with something to say. Abeast with brains as well as brawn.

“Just Getting Started” has that slow but mountainous rhythm that the likes of Led Zeppelin made their own, “Ghosts” is a polished-up, hard-hitting, boogiesome, blues-rock groover, and “Warning Signs” is a reminder that kick-arse rock and roll is back on the menu.

Runaway Emotions is a glorious affair for the rock and roll aficionado, a scattergun of nostalgic sounds shot through boogie and ballsy rock that might glance to the past occasionally but is only fixated on where it is going.
