Speaking Is A Gun - Nothing Ever Tasted so Good (self-released)

22 April 2025

Boy, there’s a lot going on here, but that’s okay, it just makes things more fun to unpack. After all, minimalist music and understated ambiance are fine, but reviews of such, at least when I write them, tend to float off into some poetic and pretentious arty earnestness. None of that is found here. This is music designed to be fun. And who isn’t ever up for a slice of fun?

But that isn’t to say that it isn’t also clever and creative; you couldn’t pack that much music into one place without being artfully at blending things so deftly that it doesn’t sound chaotic or result in everyone stepping on each other’s sonic feet.

No, “Nothing Ever Tasted so Good” is appropriately enough, a succulent sonic morsel, a blend of gnarly rock riffs and punk-infused attitude, rapped lyrical flows and groovesome energy, busy yet song-serving drums and plenty of on/off, high/low dynamic.

When I read the band’s own description that a useful reference point here might be “Chili Peppers meets Stones,” I thought that was just the usual PR company hyperbole and that those two worlds don’t mix easily. But I’m happy to report that it’s a great soundbite; the upbeat funk of the former being spliced with the casual groove of the latter is exactly what’s happening here.

As sonic odes to first love go, it’s a great song; as a new take on the splicing of various far-flung parts of the music map, it is revolutionary.
