We all feel a little lost sometimes. Lost in life, lost in love, directionless, and overwhelmed. When such feelings descend, most people find other outlets for their frustrations – we lose ourselves in other distractions, we go for walks, we read, we write, we play sports, we drink. But if you happen to be a songwriter, putting those thoughts into song is an excellent way to exorcise such feelings; it is also the perfect way to connect with others who might feel the same, reminding them that they are not alone. And that is precisely what Spencer Graham on his latest single, “Black.”
As the song rises from folky, acoustic balladry into a country-fied indie realm and eventually to roots-rock heights, it is the perfect example of the sonic slow-burn. As it goes, it gathers around it all manner of tones and textures – finessed fiddle, unfussy yet on the mark beats and bass lines, and eventually a squalling, blues-rock guitar line to help drive things home.
From the understated to the anthemic, from solo thoughts to a sense of solidarity, from the emotive to the empathic, it is a song we can all relate to, and in its sonic heart, we might not find answers, but we will find comfort. Comfort will do for now.
