All music moves with the times; it has to just to survive. But whereas many people advocate acts of sonic revolution to keep the wheels moving, you only have to recall some of the terrible things that have been caused by such acts of musical reinvention…rap rock, acid jazz, mumble rap…although that last one is less an act of revolution, more a lack of effort. No, I’d rather music evolves rather than revolts; acts of year zero nihilism are no substitute for a great record collection. And by that, I mean that if you know your musical past, you are better placed to shape the sound of the future. Spinors is a band that is very aware of this.
While “Choose to Believe” is very much the sound of rock music doing its thing, it is also a great history of the genre – a raw, grungy energy, a slightly gothic, dark demeanor, alt-rock outsiderness, and, especially when the guitar solo screeches and squals through, a nod to the age-old classic sound.
The track pounds and pummels, blends artistry and attitude, groove and grit, muscle and melody; it’s big, blinding, and bombastic. Throw in a cool steampunk sartorial elegance into the mix, and it’s everything rock and roll music needs to survive the next chapter of its already long and storied history. Familiar yet wonderfully fresh and brilliantly forward-thinking.
Nice!
