Stanley Duke and the Kindred Spirits - God of the Gaps (SDKS)

17 January 2024

Sometimes, you want music that is polished and precise. Other times, it is something brash and bombastic that does the trick. There are even times when you want to turn to calm and meditative music. It’s all horses for courses, as they say. But, when you are after something slinky and seductive, full of edge and menace but at the same time charming and charismatic, then there is no better place to turn than Stanley Duke and the Kindred Spirits.

Reveling in a fuzzed-out, psychedelic sound, a soundscape of abrasive guitars balanced with effortless grooves, grit and glamour, “God of the Gaps” ebbs and flows between destruction and seduction, between apocalyptic blues and psyched-up grooves. And with a voice that is the perfect antithesis of all the overly polished, soulless wannabees of today’s music scenes, Stanley Duke sounds a bit like Dylan fronting Jefferson Airplane had they learned their trade at the feet of Sky Saxon and the Seeds. Or something similar…feel free to make up your own strange combinations, I’m sure you won’t be that far out.

I love everything about this track. I love how purposefully out of touch it is with fad and fashion. I love how loose and louche it seems, ionically something you can only perfect by being tight and on your game as a musician. I love how scrappy yet accessible it is, how primal and infectious, and how it sounds like the past while heralding in a possible new future for rock music.

It gives you a lot to think about in four and a half minutes, but that is not even half of what is happening here. Give it a spin, dig deep, and see what sonic treasures await. You can thank me later.
