Stoneburner recasts psychedelic sludge in its own image on its second slab Life Drawing. Treating epic lengths as necessities for expression, rather than as an excuse to jam, the Portland band slathers acid-burned textures over its doom-crusted riffery, translating bad trips into inhuman speech. “Pale New Eyes,” “Caged Birds” and the titanic “The Phoenix” draw out the heavy flow with teeth-grinding intensity and deftly played dynamics – this is a band that knows when to be quiet, making the lumbering doom more crushing. Acoustic interludes cleanse the palette for the punishment to come.
