“Speak My Mind” is the sound of the old classic rock format looking for a new outlet, one that chimes more with the smarter and more switched-on contemporary audience. Strawberry Moon finds just such a sound by blending rock’s timeless tenets—incendiary riffs, pounding drums, and driving bass lines—with punky energy and an industrial edge, not to mention an echo of the riotgrrrl’s riotous sqaulling sonic attack.
Add to that Katie Bowles powerful vocals and a slightly gothic edge lingering around the song’s edges, not to mention some sharp, on/off staccato powerplays, and you have rock music repurposed for the modern age.
Taken from their latest EP Smoon, “Speak My Mind” is about watching your age creep up, realizing that you’re not a kid anymore but still being conscious of the fact that you still don’t know where you want life to take you. But it is always about accepting that these things take time to reveal themselves and still being able to accept that state of flux, of uncertainty, that vulnerability, and using it as a positive force.
Rock and roll will never die, so they say, but it does need to move with the times. This is the sound of that process, via the addition a good polish and the addition of a few upgrades, happening right in front of you.
