I doubt that anyone would argue that we don’t need more positive music in the world. In these dark and difficult times, music, like all art, naturally reflects or responds to what is happening in the world around it. And while such a wave of artistic opposition to policy and politics, hardship and heartache is only natural and indeed necessary, it does lead to some overtly serious and darkly earnest music.
Which is why we need Stray Blue and their infectious “Wake Up & Smile,” so much. The message is simple: wake up each day and count your blessings. Life, the song says, doesn’t always unfold the way we want, but there is still plenty to be thankful for. Don’t worry about things beyond your control; celebrate the things that are within reach.
And in this stripped-down, acoustic-driven version, the song is even lighter, even more upbeat and effervescent—a light and enlightening song for such dark times.
But that isn’t all. This release comes as what back in the day we would have called a double A side, with the ambient and emotive instrumental, “Moody Sky” blending Yoed Nir’’s emploring and warm cello through minimal beats and some delicate guitar rhythms.
Both songs are, in very different ways, warm and welcoming, “Wake Up and Smile” in an obvious, chirpy, contagious, and fun sort of way, while “Moody Sky” more in the form of a creative cocoon of sound.
Either way, both songs embody the positivity and purpose that we don’t often see enough of in the world today; thankfully, Stray Blue is doing its part to change that.
