Stray Owls is the sound of opposites attracting, a musical oxymoron, a sonic juxtaposition, and the logical conclusion of the notion of throwing everything into the songwriting process, including the kitchen sink. And that is meant in the most positive of ways. After all, if all we did was follow the template of what has gone before, we would still be listening to The Beatles or Scott Joplin or medieval troubadours or neolithic drum circles.
No, this is the sound of pastures new being navigated, of paths less traveled being opened for business, of the fusion of sounds that have no business hanging out together. And it is a glorious racket!
“Hey Now Now” blends scuzzy guitars and tumbling drums with scything riffs, blunt trauma beats with ragged folk ferocity, and psychedelic trippiness with bombastic indie reveries… I’m making this up as I go along (I’m not 100% sure that Straw Owls aren’t as well), which is all you can do when you find yourself in such new and unfamiliar territory. It’s the blind leading the blind…or something.
And that is what makes things so brilliant. “Hey Now Now” is so mind-trippingly weird that it becomes a challenge to write about. But surely, just the fact that it is hard to put this into words is precisely why you need to check it out for yourself. If I could make myself clear with my descriptions, it would follow that it is because you have heard it all before. The fact that, having written this, I’m not even sure it help the listener in any real way, is exactly why Stray Owls are going to become your new favorite band…or you’ll hate it… but at least they will have made a lasting impression, and you can’t say that about many bands these days.
