Sun Atoms’ “Narco Polo Remixes” do not make “Narco Polo” cleaner or easier to enter. The two-track single, released via Little Cloud Records, pulls the band’s collaboration with Isaac Brock into a darker, rougher space, with Peter G. Holmström and June Kang treating the song less like a finished object and more like material to be dragged through bass, delay, cut-up vocals, and uneven motion. That approach suits Sun Atoms. Their psychedelic side has always worked best when the beauty has some dirt on it.
“Narco Polo (NRC RMX)” moves with a loose, slightly off-centre pull. The beat does not lock into a clean dance shape, and the vocals feel smeared into the track rather than placed neatly above it. That makes the remix harder to settle into, but also gives it character. Brock’s voice and Jsun Atoms’ presence come through like fragments caught in the machinery, while the groove keeps dragging forward with a dim, heavy pressure. It is not pretty in the obvious sense. It feels murky, irritated, and tripped out in a way that makes the original song’s weirdness more physical.
The JunN remix pushes that heaviness further into the low end. Kang leans into kick, bass, samplers, sequencers, and synth pressure, letting the track feel more submerged than expansive. Across both versions, “Narco Polo Remixes” is not the band’s most inviting release, but it does not need to be. It works as a warped side entrance into the world around Everything Forever, where the song’s shape is still visible but half-buried under groove, noise, and damaged colour.
That makes the timing feel smart. As Sun Atoms head out with Modest Mouse this summer, “Narco Polo Remixes” gives the Isaac Brock collaboration another life without pretending to be a clean single push. The release is darker, stranger, and more abrasive than that. Its best quality is that it lets the remix format stay unruly, turning “Narco Polo” into something heavier and more unstable rather than smoothing it into another polished psychedelic drift.
