There is something extraordinary about Sun Atoms’ ability to blend the strident with the shimmering, the hard with the hazy, to weave dream-like sonic textures around a hammering, dance-infused pulse. “Take This Love” is the sound of this beautiful juxtaposition in action.
There is something infectious, groovesome, structured, and solid about the beat and drive that runs through the song’s heart. But the poised and polished sheen and the soft yet intricate sounds surrounding this make for a thrilling counterpoint. It’s like being delivered a body blow by a pugilist wearing kid gloves… if that isn’t too weird a concept. It hits hard, but it feels great!
This track comes as part of a double A-side with the wonderfully named “And the Lion Saw the UFO” as its traveling companion. This more drifting and delirious sound slowly coalesces into a floating groove that muses on Neil Young’s silver spaceships that were “flying Mother Nature’s silver seed into the sun” from “After The Goldrush” and the idea that animals all over the planet may be having close encounters all the time.
As always, Sun Atoms offers a brace of songs that are both an accessible and cool listening experience, but they are also full of hidden depths and meaning. It’s what they do, and they do it so well.
