SUNTWIST: a band so cool, they are as hot as hell! Listen to their latest EP, Matchbox, and you’ll find music that flows beautifully as it rides such creatively colliding convection currents, sun-kissed, warm to the touch, soaked in the sonic equivalent of the late-afternoon sun, and perfect for these autumnal times. Right, that’s enough of the tortured metaphor and poetic flounce… let’s get down to it.
The shimmering rush of the opener, ‘Stay High (Chasing Ghosts),’ initially suggests something more roaring and perhaps punk-infused is imminent, but as it settles into a groovier groove, you realize this band brilliantly juggles psychedelic sonics alongside more accessible (and infectious) melodies. It ebbs and flows between the dreamy, at times almost shoegazingly dense, and something more unashamedly pop… or at least alt-pop (alt-alt-pop?)
‘Winded in the Moonlight’ is somehow wonderfully loose and deftly woven, ‘Why Mind It’ runs on a mix of modest pace and marvelous crescendoic highs, is slightly angular but clothed in sonic trappings so poised and polished it slips easily through the listener’s conscience, and ‘I Just Wanna Dance’ is as addictive as the title suggests.
The EP ends with ‘Man I Wanna Be’, a brilliant and brilliantly spacious wander through atmosphere and anthemic, the understated and stadium-ready, fist-in-the-air vibes.
Matchbox ticks every box worth ticking, and in turn is contagious and creative, melodic and muscular, nostalgic and a glimpse of things to come, unique and yet faintly familiar. Buy it now!
