Walking that finest of lines between pop and rock might seem an obvious sonic strategy, but like most grand plans, saying such a thing and realizing it is not the same. Stray too far one way, and you end up with pop music full of rock’s bombast and bravado. Push beyond the comfort zone in the other direction, and you get rock music that is devoid of bite and hook. Talk in Code however, has perfected the knack of making music at the sweet spot where both these genres collide. The art is to surf the waves caused by such sonic collisions in the most constructive and complimentary of ways.
And, as their latest single, “Harder to Breathe,” shows, these are not the only opposites that they are able to turn into attractive propositions. They deftly blend digital dexterity with analog energies, dance grooves with indie moves, and chart accessibility with more discerning appeal. That’s a great place to find yourself.
This mesh of soulful guitar licks, shimmering synth lines, pulsing bass lines, and euphoric beats, topped off with vocals that ebb and flow between pop’s delicacy and rock’s power, is ideally placed in the modern musical landscape. Boxes are ticked and good times are had by all.
In Talk in Code, we find a band that knows how to appeal to the masses. They do so via songs that are mature yet full of fun, lyrically relevant and totally relatable, instant and infectious, and woven out of all manner of sonic tones and musical textures.
Music that is smarter than it looks yet still contagious as hell! Sounds good to me…
