Talk In Code - More Than Friends (Regent Street Records)

22 August 2025

Talk In Code has always operated in a pop, or at least pop-adjacent, world. And they have always done so with a sure-footedness and attention to detail, not to mention a songwriting prowess and level of sophistication that belies that genre’s usual quick-hit, throw-away image. “More Than Friends” heads even deeper into such realms, eschewing the often anthemic indie and almost rock-infused sonics that have defined their stadium-level sound to date.

But what they replace those bigger elements with is subtlety and seduction. The song certainly ticks all the right boxes for pop – gentle groove, shimmering sonics, chiming riffs, relatable lyrics, accessibility, and understated infectiousness. Still, it does so in the most clever and creative ways. And it does so in a way that is both fresh and familiar, echoing previous decades’ finest synth-pop and indie-dance moments whilst holding up a signpost, one pointing to a bright pop future.

It’s also a song full of space, as if all they do is take the atmospheres that are already floating by and merely mesh those emotions and moods in a scintillating sonic cage, as if the song, on some level, already exists in the world. As if all they have to do is define it.

But I’m just overthinking things now, and anyway, such a philosophical notion detracts from what the band has done here, what they always manage to do – make outstanding pop records. It is as simple as that.
