Tallulah Rendall makes music that comes from a very delicate place and never more so than with her latest single, ‘Human.’ This time out, the sounds that she works with feel even more fragile than ever: music woven from the almost imperceptible intake of sonic breath and the gossamer grace of the most understated classical fragments, a song as much built of atmosphere and anticipation as notes and words.
And this is perfect for a song exploring the frail nature of what it means to be human, to fail and be frustrated, to be imperfect, and thus accept that it is the compassion and community, caring and connectivity that fill in the gaps and make us whole.
For such a poignant and powerful subject, ‘Human’ is such a serene and, in the very best of ways, ephemeral song, ebbing and flowing on the most seductive pop textures and dexterous electronica, distant cinematic sweeps and vocals that are, at turns, sweetly whispered and soaringly anthemic.
This is the first single from Rendall’s seventh album, Only Human, and perhaps where we find her at her most vulnerable, most heartfelt, most honest, which is saying something considering that such elements and emotions have always been the cornerstones of her work.
Ironically, it is such music, that which is most deft and delicate, sounds that drift around and cocoon the listener and which at times feels as if it could fracture, fragment and float away on the breeze at any moment, which speaks volumes!
