As the album title suggests, these are songs that come from a very personal and intimate place. Anyone can write about what they see when they look out of the window, but it takes a brave artist to be searching and vulnerable enough to bear their soul. That is precisely what we find Tamar Berk doing here. But rather than fret and frown about her own inner complexities, this album instead tries to find the positive, the humour, and even the beauty in such thought patterns. Such internal machinations are, after all, what make us who we are.
Recent single, “stay close by” sets the tone, fuzzed out indie that seems to draw dots between dream-pop and cinematics, riff-driven indie, and shimmering shoegaze, whilst the title track, which follows, shows us how deep she is prepared to go to explore her own psyche.
“you ruined this city for me” is a brilliantly up-and-at-‘em piece of groovesome indie, totally relatable and a reminder that even when dealing with catharsis and confession, she is able to wrap such sentiments in brilliantly accessible sonics.
“any given weeknight” heads more fully into the dream-pop realm, “indiesleaze2005” is infectious in the extreme and “tell me why” embraces an indie-folk-pop sound whilst being lyrically profound and deeply compelling.
This is her fifth album to date, and while she has always been prepared to peel back the layers, this feels like the most intimate, the most revealing, and the most raw and emotionally open to date. It is the sound of Tamar Berk wearing her mind, her heart, and her very soul on her sleeve.
