If Good Times For A Change, the album from which this single is taken, reminds us just how versatile and adventurous Tamar Berk is as a writer and performer of songs, “That’s Not A Lie” sees her in one specific space that she has come to own, where the accessibility of pop is blended with a sort of perky, upbeat, indie rock.
This is music forged at a very rarified and sweet spot, the same place where you might find Sheryl Crow pulling up similar sonic gems. And like her, Berk mixes the brilliantly infectious with the lyrically meaningful, here musing on the navigation of relationships, the art of communication, and the fact that sometimes the truth hurts. And, ultimately it offers up the idea that for all our faults, there are people out there willing to accept us, warts and all!
These themes are echoed in the video, which wanders between upbeat performance film and more grainy footage that suggests perhaps scenes of arrest and interrogation, both metaphors for the loved and carefree vision of ourselves and that same person under the self-examination spotlight.
Tamar Berk is great with any number of musical styles, as Good Times For A Change proved. But her finest skill is the juxtaposition of joyful pop and more ornate indie, not to mention her ability to juggle the same depths and deftness in her lyrics.
