Tatum Quinn - Back In Time (Tatum Quinn Records)

12 July 2024

“Back In Time” is not just a song about the past and the feeling of liberation that comes when you are able to unshackle yourself from its clutches; it is, in many ways, a sonic celebration of it, too. Lyrically, Tatum Quinn is reminding us that, as the quote famously states, “the past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” She tells us to look to the future, be forward-focused, and not dwell on what has gone on before, especially regarding past relationships and experiences that have been, let’s just say, less than positive. And who can argue with such an optimistic call to arms?

But musically, something else is happening. She might be lyrically looking forward, but musically, she is signposting a clear affection for the classic rock of earlier times, and a a result, the song is a blend of bold riffs and anthemic sonic forces, which she then tempers with the lessons learned by pop: accessibility, infectiousness, and immediacy.

Put the two together, and you have a veritable pop-rock anthem that might lean towards the weight and bombast of the latter but which is as inviting and fun as pop has ever been. It’s the best of both worlds!

So, depending on what you are looking for, there is something for everyone. A message of freedom, a classic sound, a rock groove mixed with pop pep and a song that, even before you have navigated its full three and a half minutes, is already on repeat in that part of the brain where the earworms make their home. Go on, tell me I’m wrong!
