The digital ether occasionally facilitates rare creative alignments, bridging vast geographic divides to spark something profoundly human. ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ stands as the tangible manifestation of such a connection, born from the virtual exchange between Lise Sutter in Leipzig and Ronni What in Baton Rouge. Spanning several years of cross-continental construction, this debut project synthesizes post-punk urgency, left-field pop sensibilities, and ambient experimentation into a cohesive, wonderfully unpolished statement. Rather than sounding fractured by distance, the collaborative energy driving these recordings possesses an effortless, lived-in camaraderie.
The aesthetic foundation relies on a clever subversion of expectations, merging muscular low-end grooves with brittle, tape-manipulated textures. The album establishes its genre-fluid approach instantly with “i burnt my tongue with f-icience this morning”, a rhythmic, post-punk composition reminiscent of minimal dance-punk minimalism. The vocals arrive enveloped in subtle dub processing, drifting casually above rigid, idiosyncratic percussion patterns that swap standard drum kits for peculiar acoustic strikes. This propulsive energy transitions smoothly into “horse eating an apple”, a piece that acts as the philosophical anchor for the entire project, celebrating the charm of imperfection over the sterile trap of overproduction.
Throughout the sequence, the duo constructs highly imaginative auditory landscapes by relying heavily on found sounds and unexpected instrumentation. “dropping in” and “piper has a flashlight video” introduce slow-moving, motorik rhythms interlocked with beautifully warped horn samples and environmental field recordings. These elements prevent the songs from settling into predictable formats. The tracks function as collages, where scroungy guitar motifs and organic chord progressions intertwine naturally on pieces like “crickets speaking” and the rhythmically complex “(bring more this time).”
The second half of the record deepens this playful experimentation. Short sonic sketches and rhythmic detours, such as “d & b” and “surprisingly empty cart”, contrast beautifully with the more dense arrangements found elsewhere. On “alien visitation scene” and the winding “three lung group chat”, the duo demonstrates an uncanny ability to balance avant-garde curiosity with pop magnetism. The collection reaches a fascinating resolution with “would we have a would-workshop?”, an ingenious acoustic guitar construction that sounds like a salvaged nineties rhythm-and-blues track, driven forward by the clever, percussive ticking of sampled clocks.
