Telephonist - Gegen die Wand (Dreams Never End Records)

9 February 2026

In the subterranean corridors of contemporary electronic music, few projects manage to capture the weight of silence as effectively as Telephonist. With their debut EP, the duo embarks on a sonic journey that strips away the superficial layers of production to reveal the raw, skeletal pulse of the modern city. It is a work defined by its gravity and its refusal to offer easy solace, carving out a space where shadow and substance become indistinguishable.

‘Gegen die Wand,’ arrives as a stark and brooding meditation on urban isolation and the fragmented nature of memory. As multi-instrumentalists, Dennis Mielke and Oskar Middelhauve exhibit a remarkable command over the physical textures of sound, crafting an atmosphere that feels both expansive and uncomfortably intimate. The opening “Gegen die Wand” sets a formidable precedent for the release, acting as a sonic threshold where driving rhythms meet a wall of cold, synthetic precision. It is a piece that captures the friction of modern existence, suggesting a psychological push against the boundaries of a rigid, unyielding environment.

As the record transitions into “Was du Warst,” the focus shifts toward a more introspective, almost ghostly interrogation of the past. Mielke and Middelhauve layer the instrumentation with a deliberate, haunting economy, allowing the melancholic weight of the arrangements to breathe. There is a palpable sense of longing in the melodies, which navigate the space between what was and what remains. This thematic thread is pulled even tighter in “Kalter Beton,” a track that serves as the architectural heart of the EP. Here, the duo successfully translates the literal coldness of the city into a rhythmic language that feels metallic and unforgiving, yet strangely beautiful in its brutalist simplicity.

The penultimate track, “Ins Blau,” offers a moment of relative expansion, though it never fully abandons the dark-wave sensibilities that define the record. It feels like a descent into a deep, oceanic blue, where the percussion and melodic swells create a sensation of weightlessness amidst the gloom. This leads the listener toward the finality of “Von Grund Auf,” a composition that suggests a dismantling and rebuilding from the floor up. It is a powerful conclusion that emphasizes the duo’s ability to weave complex emotional narratives through instrumental and vocal synthesis, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved tension.

Throughout the EP, the duo’s musicianship is characterized by a sophisticated understanding of balance and contrast. By embracing a minimalist aesthetic without sacrificing depth, Telephonist has created a work that feels timeless yet urgently contemporary. ‘Gegen die Wand’ is more than just a collection of songs; it is a meticulously curated environment of shadow and light, marking the arrival of a project that understands how to turn melancholy into a profound and resonant art form.
