The 1981, a collaborative project spearheaded by Bobby Martinez (owner of Dandy Boy Records) and Adam Widener, follow their critically noted 2023 debut LP, ‘Move On’, with their latest single, showcasing a refinement and diversification of their sonic identity.

“Soft Goodbye” is a exemplary track within the power pop genre, representing a synthesis of classic and contemporary influences. The song is immediately arresting, opening with a distinct, jangling guitar riff that establishes a high degree of melodic efficacy. Its production navigates a successful equilibrium, achieving the desired balance between robust, driving rock energy and infectious, catchy pop sensibility.

The composition employs notable features, including a playful organ line and the strategic use of big, crunchy riffs paired with expansive, huge harmonies, resulting in a memorable, summery sonic texture. Its appeal lies in its infectious quality, described as potentially the most effective track yet produced by The 1981. This track effectively plays into the cyclical resurgence of ’90s culture within the indie/garage rock sphere.

In contrast to the vibrant A-side, “Count On Me” demonstrates a broader scope of the band’s compositional and stylistic versatility. The track exhibits a palpable shift in influence, notably incorporating elements that evoke the exploratory, slightly eccentric spirit of Elvis Costello blended with a raw, garage-rock keyboard lick. This unexpected juxtaposition of textures and styles is deemed surprisingly successful, suggesting an effective appropriation of diverse source material.

The 7-inch release, available through Dandy Boy Records, features the core duo alongside contributions from Colin McDonald, Alex Halatsis, and Paul Igaz. The recording process was managed by Jack Erin Brown (Friendless Summer, ex-*Healing Potpourri*) and Rob Good (The Goods, Ryli), ensuring a well-engineered presentation and cover art by David Christian (Comet Gain).

Collectively, the single re-establishes the band’s foundation in garage rock while maintaining a clean, accessible sound. The overall aesthetic is characterized as bridging the gap between classic and contemporary Bay Area power pop, maintaining a gritty *Elvis Costello*-meets-Nuggets undertone, and affirming The 1981’s position within the modern power pop landscape.
