The fact that the band themselves have subtitled “The Simian” as “a sonic journey through classic vibes and modern grooves,” in a way, writes the review for me. For that is exactly what this is. But then again, you, dear reader, are probably looking for more than that. And I know the band will want me to do more than repeat their by-line, so here goes.
The classic vibes that they mention remind me of everything from The Allman Brothers – Ari Joshua’s precision guitar and the ebbing and flowing Kris Yunker Hammond Organ calling to mind that band’s unique sonic landscape – to more West Coast jazz-infused setups such as Steely Dan. I’m sure any band would be happy with such references.
It’s a groover, for sure, and again, down to the adventurous and original playing of those concerned, namely Ben Atkind on the full kit and the additional percussive layering of Jason Hann of The String Cheese Incident fame. Proof once again that beats are more than just beats, they are timing and texture too, that they are more than mechanics and have their own sense of melody when done right. This is the sound of things being done right.
“The Simian” is a great song, but it is more than that. What it actually is is a group of astute and talented musicians, players at the top of their game, making mellifluous music that echoes with the greatness of the past, the modernity of the here and now, and which points to a bright future for all concerned. As if that last one was ever in any doubt!
