The Amanda Emblem Experiment is back with its latest single, “Storm In My Life,” which proves to be a breezy yet bittersweet affair, marking the first taste of the forthcoming album, The Wood. Like all good storms, it is both unexpected and unavoidable, but its passing somehow leaves us feeling fresh and invigorated and the musical landscape cleaner.
On the surface, “Storm in My Life” moves along as an upbeat blues-folk number, the product of buoyant fingerpicking, sunny harmonica flourishes, and seductive slide guitars, not to mention possessing an instant accessibility and plenty of infectiousness – reminiscent of a poppier, quirkier version of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, (for those readers who have been around the block a few times.) But there’s more to this storm than meets the eye. This is storytelling through metaphor; a lover compared to tempestuous weather, a force of nature, spinning between verses like a leaf in the wind. But it is that excitement, that drama, that chaos that is the attraction, that free-spiritedness that provides the adrenaline rush.
And while its tone remains light—almost playful—there’s an unspoken gravity here. After all, recent years have taught us that storms, both literal and metaphorical, physical and emotional, have a way of rewriting landscapes. Emblem captures that beautifully, balancing heartfelt vulnerability with melodic ease.
A seasoned performer and songwriter, Amanda Emblem has been quietly carving her name into the Australian music scene for over two decades. Based in the Mary Valley, she formed The Amanda Emblem Experiment in 2017 and has been weaving rootsy, reflective music ever since.
