I don’t want to denigrate the current music scene, and at risk of dealing with gross generalizations, the high point of pop music seems a long time ago now. Maybe it’s my age; perhaps it’s because I like a great hook and well-crafted song; in a world where pop music is driven more by style than substance, I yearn for songs that have both. Maybe in a scene dominated by gizmos and gimmicks, lowest sonic denominators and dance routines, guest rappers, and fleeting musical fads and fashion, I just want to hear a good tune.
“Colorful Wishes” is a good tune—no, make that a great tune. It is clear that The Bright Collide looks to the past for inspiration and influence, and there is a heady mix of pop and post-punk, rock and indie, at work here, all brought together in such a way that the song is both wonderfully accessible, chart accessible even, and yet feels like part of an underground scene.
Delicate pop hooks merge with rock salvos; indie grooves run all through the track, and, in the cyclical nature of music, this feels like both a nod to the past and a vision of a bright new future for a tired and aching music scene.
Fingers crossed!
