As the conclusion of the three-year, three-EP mission to boldly go where music may have gone before, but rarely this deftly, The Buddyrevelles drop the final piece of the sonic triptych, The Conviction.
Trying to fit the band into a genre or find a concise tag for the music they make is, as is the case with all good music, pointless; such is their ability to roam the sonic landscape, picking up, Magpie-like, any shiny things that take their fancy. But perhaps indie-pop is a good starting point, and certainly fits ‘Living Human Lives’ better than most other epithets you might think of, even when it rocks up, fills out sonically, adds pace to its poise, and heads for the finish line.
‘Single-Sided Sword,’ a title that in itself feels like a Buddhist koan, is a great example of their slippery and uncategorizable sonic shape, sounding like an almost mainstream ballad, although one built on math rock principles and then blossoming into an angular art attack as it travels. Prog-pop perhaps? Perhaps not.
Things are rounded off with the rock riffs and relentless momentum of ‘Oh, No,’ which, even when the music slows, is no less full of skittering drums and spiky, intense guitar lines. Or if I was one of those clever scribblers working for the high-falutin’, zeitgeist chasing, fashion and fad following music mags, who favour a short, sharp, shockingly cute and definitely not paid-by-the-word review – ‘Oh, No’ … hell yes! (Man, this reviewing thing is easier than I thought.)
So that is the end of one chapter, so where next for The Buddyrevelles? I don’t really care, but whichever pastures new or familiar paths, roads less travelled or bright horizons they head for, I know that I won’t be far behind them.
