There is, in the rock world, a sweet spot between muscle and melody, and that is precisely where you find The Cloud Pilot with their latest single, “I Choose To Be Free.” We also see them armed with an essential and timely message: that freedom is, often, a choice, and that sometimes our own inaction keeps us metaphorically in chains.
Okay, that might arguably be a too simplistic point of view, but as we see more and more people standing up to and fighting back against the growing authoritarianism worldwide, it still remains a very valid point.
And they make it via sonics that range from subtlety and seduction to widescreen artistry and anthemics. Bass and backbeat increasingly drive the song forward, guitars either join the melodic throng or dance deftly above it, and the vocals are, in themselves, an act of defiance against the growing injustices of the world. Taken as a whole, it is the perfect blend of grace, grit, groove, and grandeur.
Increasingly, bands are setting their sights on making music which, whilst it might not be politically specific, certainly addresses the growing fears of people across the globe. And what might have once been merely a dissenting voice in the creative wilderness is now a small part of a rising chorus of concern.
