The Flying Beets - Don't Let Me Notice (Sweet Beets - IMD)

27 December 2024

It always pays to kick off a single with a great hook, and as the rules of rock and roll dictate, the simpler it is, the better. The Flying Beets have obviously read the rules, as that four-note motif that leads us in and which is then teased out sparingly as the song progresses, is precisely what the writers of the rules had in mind when they chiseled those sacred missives on the stone tablets at the dawn of the rock and roll age.

So, this is rock, of course, but cleverly, “Don’t Let Me Notice” swerves further categorization. The song is built on some classic moves, is slightly alternative, has pop-aware accessibility, and is washed through with surf sonics and just a hint of rockabilly vibes…it has beat and bravado, muscle, and melody.

The band might only be a couple of years old, but already, they are turning out songs that sound like you have been listening to them forever—music that sounds both timely and timeless, totally fresh yet brilliantly familiar. And if that isn’t the definition of a “classic,” then I don’t know what is.

“Don’t Let Me Notice” is many things, but above all, it is proof that we don’t need to invent new genres and scenes to ensure longevity for the musical art form. The work has, for the most part, already been done. All the smart band of today has to do is look to the past for influence and inspiration and then rearrange those sonic building blocks into new and potent patterns. And The Flying Beats are, demonstrably, a very smart band.

That’s how you build a bright and exciting new future for not just rock and roll but music in general.
