The Gary – Logan (Cedar Fever)

As a music town, Austin is known for lots of things: blues, country, psychedelia, Spoon. What’s not usually celebrated is River City postpunk, of which there’s a lot but word hardly ever seems to get out. Maybe the Gary can change that with Logan. The trio has the tenets down: dissonant but not abrasive guitars, nimble but not rubbery rhythms, forceful but not declamatory vocals, probing but not pseudointellectual lyrics. Admittedly, there’s nothing new going on in the grooves of “QSB,” “Ancient Music” (lyrics courtesy of Ezra Pound) or “Three-Point-Two.” But the band’s sturdy melodies, tight musicianship and clear love for what it does makes innovation irrelevant. If you’re a fan of bands like the Embarassment, Eleventh Dream Day or Mission of Burma, the Gary will flick every switch in your pleasure zone.
