The Gods They Made - Hypnotic (self-released)

5 June 2026

Sitting between a post-punk past and a forward-thinking indie future, The Gods They Made is a reminder that all music, all creativity, all art, is built by standing on the shoulders of giants. And I don’t necessarily mean that “Hypnotic” sounds like what has gone before, although you can easily detect some excellent alternative and underground references running through it. But more than that, the band is clearly aware of music’s rich past and uses this, in part, to build a sound for the future.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, in the last six years the band has released a string of well-received singles and a masterful debut album, Breathe In produced by Depeche Mode and The Cure’s go to guy, Steve Lyon. Clearly great company to find themselves in.

And I mention this because such connections seem obvious when you listen to their latest single, “Hypnotic.” It has both the cinematic and anthemic soundscaping of the former and the driving bass-and-beat engine room of the latter. But woven within such acknowledgments to what has gone before, they forge their own sonic personality, a blend of angular riffs tempered by edge-softening sonic washes, unbridled super-charged energy, and clever dynamic flow.

It’s indie for a new age, rock with sonic smarts, proving that while it is important to tip your hat to what has gone before, it is just as important to know where you are going. And The Gods They Made are only heading in one direction, into a bright new indie-rock future.
