I previously marveled over the oh “So Sweet” blends of pop and indie that made The Harbours previous single such a great experience. Well, the new one, “Live It Up,” works the same mercurial magic as before and then lights a fire under it.
It’s such a simple instruction, but it has so many different connotations, one for each individual listener. But whatever gets you going is what The Harbours are suggesting we do. Life’s too short, and all that.
Such a call to fun and frenzy, sociability, and the abandonment of responsibility needs a similarly effervescent sound. So, to that end, we are given slick and soulful guitar licks, infectious bass lines, and an energy that acts as the perfect soundtrack to just the sort of night that the band is telling us will do us so much good. It’s groovesome in the extreme.
It’s indie music without all that holier-than-thou earnestness, pop music with poise and maturity, an anthem to adolescence (though we can all take a leaf out of that book, no matter what age), and a reminder to go out and party. (Although I’m not sure about using the word party as a verb, I’ll let it go this once.)
Whenever you think you are getting too old, too tired, or too jaded to head for the bright lights, turn this on and remind yourself that there is no dress rehearsal for this one life—go out and live it. Now!
