We’ve all been there: that feeling of falling, of infatuation, of love and longing, those moments of not knowing if that person feels the same way. You’re in deep and, for now at least, you are on your own. But love, even unrequited, is a force that can take us over; even when we are not sure whether this is a two-way emotional street, we feel more ‘Alive’ than ever. That is the premise behind the new one from The Heavy North, hence the title: a song capturing such feelings of levity and cloud ninery, the glory of letting emotions rule, of listening to the heart rather than the head. It’s what makes us human.
It’s a timeless feeling, and in a way a timeless song, woven as it is from ageless classic blues-rock and 70s Hammond drifts, that 60s bop beat and psychedelic guitar groove, a song that you could only really pin down as being something loosely from the ‘contemporary’ music age, and leave it as vague as that.
Some writing about such head rushes might focus on wanting an answer, needing to know if this feeling will turn into duality, a bond, a relationship; The Heavy North instead is happy to revel in merely the feeling, that Schrodingers Love-Cat moment when love and rejection hold equal weight.
What a great song, what a fascinating subject, what a band to watch out for.
