The Icons – Appointment With Destiny!(Green Monkey)

Green Monkey mastermind Tom Dyer promised to revive the Icons after releasing the band’s 80s recordings as Masters of Disaster, and sure enough, the Seattle troop is back with its sophomore effort Appointment With Destiny! With twenty-five years gone by, there’s no way Dyer and co-singer/songwriter Steve Trettevik can recapture the fizz of the old days, but that doesn’t mean the Icons are a pale imitation of themselves. Older, wiser, still smartassed and still in love with catchy tunes, Dyer, Trettevik and their cohorts substitute brattiness for eccentricity, cheeky silliness for wizened wit. Boasting an even more stripped-down power pop style than in ye olden days, the Icons whip out memorable gems like “No Hammer,” “Let It Go” and “You Never Have Time” with the ease of veterans and the energy of a second childhood. Trading youthful verve for mature experience hasn’t harmed the Icons one whit on Appointment With Destiny!
