Music has always been a good bellwether, an indication of what items and agendas concern people around the world today. The two subjects that I find music makers turning to more and more are the dark political and social state of the world, and concerns about the effects of technology on how we live our lives, not to mention its impact on our mental state. And, of course, the two subjects are intrinsically linked.
It is the issues of that collision point where man and machine meet and mix that keep The Lunar Keys awake at night… quite literally. Can data and desire really work together? Do technology and emotion ever form harmonious relationships? Have we opened a Pandora’s Box of antisocial media, of loneliness masquerading as connectivity, of disslocation rather than community, of AI-driven emotions and binary boredom?
As the band set these thoughts to astute and infectious indie-rock, fired on my anthemic, sing-along vocals, squalling guitar riffs, propulsive beats and bass lines, and the sort of track that is going to pick up radio play effortlessly in all the cool quarters, it makes you think. And that is the whole point. We need to think more about the world we are cocooning ourselves in, rather than unquestioningly embracing any progress just because it looks great on the surface.
And, just as a way of putting their money where their mouth is, for every bit of coverage, review, or playlisting that “Pure As Your Protocol” receives, the band will donate a pound to the mental health charity MIND.
Artistry and altruism found hand in hand. How cool is that?
