There is something euphoric that rides along in the music that The Mess: Age makes, something that picks you up and carries you with it, whether you want to go or not. So, in the face of such an unstoppable sonic force, all you can do really is surrender to the moment and go with the flow. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?
Essentially, the song sits somewhere in the rock-and-roll realm, but that label perhaps doesn’t convey its adventurousness and buoyancy, as the beat and guitar drive are shot through with sweet, soulful licks and a joyous sense of pop perkiness and poise, deep-seated devotional qualities, and sun-soaked indie vibes. There is nothing here not to like, an immediacy that goes straight for the heart, simultaneously empowering and smile-inducing.
I know that rock music has made a name for itself as moody, serious, earnest, and occasionally pretentious; well, ‘Light of Blue (Sugar Ocean Girl)’ is what happens when it swaps its traditional black attire for a Hawaiian shirt, dances unabashedly rather than merely trying to look cool and a bit dangerous (grow up!), and makes music that is celebratory and scintillating. It’s the shiny side of the sonic coin.
