I have written about The Muster Point Project many times, and I’ve always made the point that this is a band that wanders freely across the musical landscape, gathering whatever elements and shiny sonic things take their fancy as they meander and move and mosey around. Yet, having been forewarned by the man himself that ‘Dance All Night With You’ had a disco element to it, I was certainly intrigued. Surely that would be a bridge too far...or at least a pre-chorus hard to envisage. (That’s funny, right?)
But of course, Kevin Franco is adept at tackling new sounds without losing his signature sound, a juggler of the fresh and the familiar, a conqueror of sonic worlds…(too much?) and that’s exactly what he does here. As you listen to this simple celebration of the pleasure of dancing with that one special person, as the song wanders the usual indie-americana soundscapes, as the guitars raise their game, riffing and roaring, you might be forgiven for thinking that he was setting me up.
And then it happens, and we drop from the straight rock and roll four-four into… well, a different take on that familiar time signature, but now with all those signature beats that made disco so infectious – bass kicks pick up pace, snares snap, and the hi-hat shimmers and swings on the off-beats as only disco could. Man, that’s a groove, and one perfect for a song about cutting a rug with your loved one.
As always, The Muster Point Project find their own corner of the genre, one where they can play out their recognisable indie-rock sound, now more pop-aware than ever, but once that chorus kicks in, the echo of neon-soaked 70s dance takes you away.
Is there nowhere that this band can’t go? No musical form they can’t remake in their own image? It would seem not!
