There are great bands. There are great songs. And the two don’t necessarily go hand in hand. This is why when you stumble across those two co-existing in the same place, as they do with The Muster Point Project, it is a cause for celebration.
And “Darlin,’” their latest single, is indeed a great song, one that shows that even though the band has opted for less ornate beats and straight-down-the-line rock and roll vibes, they still know how to approach such a song with deftness and taste. Whereas most would reel off such a sonic salvo with mere bombast and bravado and be happy with that, these Canadian maestros blend the required groove and grit with some smart sonic moves.
Bend your ear in, and you hear cool guitar motifs dancing over the more thunderous riffs, great additional vocals, the rise and fall of keys, and all manner of purposefully placed and perfectly poised sounds.
A simple song that is anything but, and, having done everything it needs to do in the required two and a half minutes, the perfect length for any addictive ditty, it bows out with minimal fuss. Who says rock and roll can’t be big AND clever?
