Sometimes, you have to say, “enough is enough. “. Sometimes, you have to walk away. Sometimes you have to look at how you are being treated and say, I don’t deserve this. And that is what lies at the heart of this latest single from The Muster Point Project.
It’s about reclaiming your own sense of self-worth. Walking away is not the same as giving up. Walking away is a deliberate act that says “I’m better than this.” It’s sometimes hard to do; it’s taken me decades to be able to say “No.” Life’s too short to feel unhappy. (I, for example, have recently made the decision to be less burdened by the deadlines and demands of others, which is probably why this review is four days late…hey, you can’t have it both ways!)
“Getting Out (Good as It Gets)” sees Kevin Franco wandering the same sonic territories that make Tom Petty’s solo work so memorable: that perfect balance between rock-and-roll chops and a folkier finesse, music that rolls sweetly into the listeners’ conciousness and which also has something to say…not the earth shattering stuff, but profound in a personal, everday sort of way.
It is a fairly restrained, acoustic affair, at least to begin with, but as it runs, as we follow Kevin from his lightbulb moment to slamming the door behind him, things gently and effortlessly build. Seductive motifs flit by, raw guitars underline with the necessary weight when needed, soul vocals back him up, myriad percussion joins the unfussy beats as we move from troubadoric simplicity to full band groove – although apart from Marcelo Effori on kit bashing duty, it’s all Kevin Franco. What a talented chap.
As always, an accessible song, a memorable tune, and a sentiment that makes many of us nod our heads and sagely sigh, “yeah, been there.”
