There has always been something Petty-esque about the music that The Muster Point Project makes – the more vibrant songs leaning into that same punchy indie-rock sound, the more nuanced once, as we have here, feeling like singles from his sumptuous solo albums.
“Greener Grass” is one of those deft and delicate songs that walks a fine line between pop and roots, between the easily accessible and the more finessed. The mandolin takes the sonic spotlight, with the bass adopting some gorgeous, wandering melodies to back it up, and the guitars and drums then merely create a gentle momentum and all sonic boxes are ticked. Simple as that.
But, of course, it is not as simple as that; if it were, we would all be firing off songs and filling albums with music this great. This is music that sounds simple because everything is exactly where it needs to be and doing only what it needs to do. No kitchen sinks took flight during the creation of this song. And against these jangling country-pop vibes, Kevin Franco spins a familiar tale, a gentle word of warning as old as the hills, and one in which many of us might recognise ourselves.
We tell ourselves that we go with the flow when, in reality, what we mean is that we actively avoid the more challenging parts of life. We say we are a dreamer when, in fact, we are a fantasist, or worse, a coward. And as we move down the years, those problems that we have constantly sidestepped always come back to confront us, looming larger with every passing year.
Always a great song, always a meaningful message and as is always the case with The Muster Point Project, your day is always made better for having them as a soundtrack.
