It is very easy, especially for those of us outside The Muster Point Project’s Canadian homeland, to confuse that country’s homegrown music and the artists behind it with that of their neighbours to the south in the USA. Just as many confuse the artists that make up the rich heritage of the UK’s musical canon, which I grew up with, with American music.
So, just to put the record straight, the new one from The Muster Point Project is not only a celebration of the music that used to flood our young minds via those small transistor radios that those of use of a certain age would listen to at night, underneath the covers when we were meant to be sleeping, it is also a neat and timely reminder of what great music Canada has given the world.
Mandolin and beat-driven “I’ve Heard It All” takes the band’s brilliant blend of indie-rock and, I guess, what we should call a Canadiana sound, and guides us through their musical landscape, from Leonard Cohen to Cowboy Junkies, from Bare Naked Ladies to YYZ and a host of lesser-known bands that will probably raise a grin or two in more homegrown quarters.
The Muster Point Project are great observers of the minutiae of life, experts at pointing at things and places and experiences in a way that makes us all nod, smile, and say, “Yes, I’ve been there.” It’s what they do, and they do it brilliantly.
Note to self: Play The Caution Horse by Cowboy Junkies more often.
