As someone whose job it is to make sure you spend your time and, hopefully, your hard-earned cash on the product that I represent, it would be easy to be conflicted about The Muster Point Project’s latest sonic slice, “That’s How They Getcha,” given that it is a takedown of marketing, promotion, and the hard, and often hidden, sell. But I like to think I choose to promote already high-quality products and the finest wares known to man, ones that offer fantastic value for money and will undoubtedly enrich your life… which is obviously why I write about Kevin Franco’s musical vehicle so often.
No, “That’s How They Getcha” is not about such people as me or him or such life-improving music, (available now on all good platforms) but about the scams and cons, the corporate hucksters and the small print that often means that the thing you thought you were getting – the cheap home insurance, the guaranteed full refund, the free trial or the 70% off, the zero % interest or the budget airline ticket – just doesn’t cut.
But Kevin and the gang don’t worry about it; after all, what can you do? No, they get their groove on, rip up the paperwork, rip up the dancefloor and go for it. The result is a song that sits somewhere between their usual quality indie-roots-pop-rock and sassy, Soul-Train-infused R&B.
It sees them at both their most socially relevant and effortlessly funky, turning the beige bore of the corporate world into a party anthem, proving yet again that there is no subject, no matter how dry and dusty, that they can’t get you to move to.
So, buy “That’s How They Getcha” now; you’ll laugh, you’ll dance…it’ll change your life.*
