The Muster Point Project - The Singing Mailman (Francomedia)

10 October 2024

The Muster Point Project are masters of writing songs that take difficult subjects and make them accessible and optimistic. Whether dealing with the difficulties of holding a family together in the face of financial hurricanes, reflecting on how that old suit, once worn for celebrations, not only gets dusted down for funerals or how you don’t recognize the town of your youth, they turn these poignant considerations into the coolest songs.

Now, I’m not saying that these are gloomy affairs—they are anything but—that’s the point, but it is nice when they deliver a song about pure joy, success, and dreams coming true.

“The Singing Mailman” is a narrative song about the rapid rise of John Prine, the titular postal worker who realized his dream to be a professional musician and an artist that The Muster Point Project has both covered and found inspiration.

Set to their usual blend of country and rock, it is a song woven of some neat sonic textures, not least charango, the sensible and sophisticated big brother to the far too ubiquitous ukulele, and the trusty mandolin, alongside some bigger guitars and backbeats but also delicately woven pedal steel courtesy of Jon Graboff who has graced both Ryan Adams and Willie Nelson’s work.

And who doesn’t love a story of such seemingly overnight success? Who wasn’t inspired by the music that Prine made? Who didn’t love the man’s quiet ways and gentle humor? Not to mention his brilliant songs. And similarly, who wouldn’t love a song this brilliantly put together?
