The Muster Point Project - This Town Has Changed (Francomedia)

27 August 2024

The Muster Point Project makes music that comes with one thing that a lot of music made today has missed. It comes with a whole dose of reality. Honesty, authenticity and reality! Just as “Nothing Ever Goes Away” dealt with the cost of living crisis, the spiraling debts, and the difficulty in making ends meet that seems to have gripped the world in recent decades, the new one, “This Town Has Changed” deals with the changing world in a more nostalgic way.

Here, the narrator looks at the town he has long called home and muses on why things are not the same as they used to be. The viewpoint is nostalgic, perhaps even rose-tinted, but gets to the idea that the world changes slowly, often only perceptible in hindsight, but does so irrevocably. One day, you look around and don’t recognize that once-familiar place. Has the town changed, or have you? Perhaps both!

Is it just a case of getting older? Is it because values change, lifestyles alter, belts tighten, and the free spirit of yesteryear has been replaced by responsibility and routine? Or is it something more deep-rooted and nefarious happening in society? Whatever it might be, we have become the square pegs in the round hole.

But what hasn’t changed is The Muster Point Project’s ability to lash poignant and powerful topics onto the most straightforward and accessible, folk-infused rock music, songs with poise and purpose.

Some bands like to talk about social issues and our changing communities, but few bands make such a conversation so relaxed. Some bands like to rabble rouse and get all dramatic about such themes; the Muster Point Project sounds like a quiet conversation over a few beers with a close friend just before closing-time on a quiet Tuesday night! And that is a beautiful vibe to be able to create.
