As you will have gathered from comments on reviews of the few Christmas tunes I have written about this far, I’m not that taken with the whole concept. They add little to the sonic conversation and are usually built on cloy, cliche, and saccharine sentiment. Yes, bah, humbug! I know, I know.
However, when The Muster Point Project drops its own Christmas cracker, even I take notice. This is a band that has, over numerous singles and handfuls of albums, never let me down. Not once. In fact, if I were one of those people who felt self-important enough to publish a list of my favourite songs of the year, they would be all over it! But I don’t, so they’re not.
So, what makes a Muster Point Project festive tune better than the rest? Well, for a start, the music. Rather than opt for the obvious jiggles and jangles, what we get is a Latin-infused slice of indie-rock. It is understated rather than overplayed. It’s full of deft sonic touches and breezy brass blasts. It is, in short, well-written and way above the benchmark that most holiday songs are measured by.
And whilst it touches on the traits and traditions of the season, it is essentially saying, with the help of some subtle and well-timed innuendo, why wait for Christmas to show your love for someone…we can, and indeed should, do this all year round! Which is as it should be.
It’s a fair point. Why wait for the performative moves and monetarized sentiments of Christmas, Birthdays, Valentines, and other calendrical constructs when you should be showing people how you feel about them every single day?
A Christmas song that is relevant every day, hour, minute, and moment of the year. That’s why you turn to The Muster Point Project for your holiday songs.
