Musical backstories are often interesting, and for every “schoolmates form a band to relieve the boredom of small-town life,” there are two or more that are worth reading about. And this is very much the case with The Nagual Effect, a project born in the namesake Nagual Beach Bar in central Greece. And what began as a “relaxed get-together by the sea rapidly evolved into an intense, intercultural jam session – and a lifelong friendship.” That’s a great original story for any band, don’t you think?
“Dive Away”, the latest single, reflects the place and nature of this beginning, a slightly hazy, slightly psychedelic, slightly magical blend of alternative groove and dream-pop grace, oozing with less tangible elements – sun-soaked creativity, music made away from the gaze of the mainstream of normal life, the light reflecting on the waters turned into a sound, a warmth, a lushness, a longing for escape. Things that you can’t quite put your finger on but which are definitely there.
“You count the coins, I count the days” is a brilliant line, an affirmation of how the song, and indeed those behind it, advocate the things that matter, the simple pleasures, the moments that linger in the mind rather than mind-numbing repetitions of the rat race.
This is music made with a lysergic loveliness; it’s a bliss-filled four minutes, but also a reminder that when it comes down to it, we are here for a good time, not a long time, and so need to make the most of things that matter, especially when those things are the things that you might think matter the least – but where are the simple pleasures in life found if not in relaxing, in beautiful vistals, great companny and artistic collaboration?
