The Palace of Tears - Veiled Screen, Woven Dream (self-released)

10 April 2024

There is a place where the vaudeville, which all too often weighs down music made in the gothic realm, is shaken loose to replace it with more classical grandeur. A place where the stygian doom of the genre washes up against more anthemic and epic creativity. It is where the likes of Dead Can Dance, Liza Gerard’s subsequent solo career and perhaps even Cocteau Twins would find themselves at home, none of whom you would tag gothic in the classical sense. It is a place where you find The Palace of Tears and their extraordinary grand and elegant music.

And what we get with Veiled Screen, Woven Dream is a series of tracks that feel more like mini-symphonies than songs in the usual sense, sonic expressions that wander between ambient electronica and sonic crescendoes, between hushed vocal intimacies and anthemic operatics. This is music that is truly in the realm of soundscaping rather than just the making of songs. This is the stuff of cinematic film scores, sonics writ larger than life, otherworldly and seeming to have little to do with the world of regular rock or throwaway pop., and that can only be a good thing.
