I guess the only thing you can expect from any Pull of Autumn release is that it will, in some way, be unexpected. Working with the broadest sonic palette and creative imagination to match, there is no point trying to second-guess the band. It’s best to just drop the virtual needle on the digital platter and see what issues forth.
This time, what issues forth is “I Was Just Dreaming,” a gorgeous blend of indie-folk textures and ambient tones. These sonic spirals owe as much to the delicacy and deftness of their creation as to their actual sound, a fragile and fantastic, graceful and gorgeous ambient soundscape. Imagine, if you will, a collaboration between Lou Reed and Nick Drake, where the slightly left-of-centre delivery of the former is used to carry the dreamy folkscapes of the latter to a whole new audience.
And if “I Was Just Dreaming”, which acts as a teaser and taster and tester of water for the band’s fifth album Memory Tree, sounds familiar, as the more discerning music fans out there will have already spotted, it is because it is a cover of legendary Scottish band and Sarah Records stalwarts The Orchids. Such discerning taste in music and the brave and astute decision to cover such a song, should be reason enough to ensure that you never let any future release from The Pull of Autumn slip past you without sampling the bands latest sonic wares, and doing so deeply and at much length.
