It’s amazing how, after just a few encounters with The Pulltops, I can spot them a mile off in the musical crowd of my working day. Not because they sound the same every time—far from it. But they do so many things so well, and so much better than most, that they stand out from the pack. A long way out.
And even when they are delivering a less pacey and more poised piece, as they do here on their latest single, “Ain’t Home Anymore,” their sonic talents and songwriting qualities are still obvious. Something brilliant in the twin vocal delivery gets me every time. There is an instant and obvious groove, even more evident in the slow and slinky rhythm on which they build this song. And there is enough space for everything to breathe. And then, the icing on the cake are the great lyrics – poetically understated, instantly relatable.
“Ain’t Home Anymore” is one of those laments that is both personal and universal. The idea of finding yourself in a familiar space that, due to changing times and tastes, fads and fashions, our own, inevitable aging process, and the times moving on, no longer feels like home and is now just a place that looks familiar is something that we can all relate to.
It happens to us all. We are no longer the young men about town that we once were. These bars and streets, hangouts, and cafes have been taken over by the next generation. Times have moved on, and we have, to some degree, had our day. When that happens, The Pulltops opt to do the only thing left available to them: write a killer pop-Americana song about these changing times.
That’ll show the young upstarts!
