If you have heard only one or two songs by The Pulltops (and if so, why so few?), then you will already be a fan of that joyous, widescreen vocal delivery that is the focal point of much of their music. “Red Eye Open Sky” is one of those songs that really pushes that aspect of their music, a sound once heard makes you wonder why more bands don’t make the most out of their vocal harmonies.
This song about travelling home to the one you love through the still of the night, crossing off those haunted miles that bring you ever nearer to the place you most want to be, is the antithesis of most people’s idea of a late-night driving song. But it dwells not on the journey but on the destination, the happiness waiting at the end, not the lonely nocturnal travel. If Buddha taught us that it is better to travel well than to arrive, he’s never driven the length of the M1 after a gig just so that he could crawl exhausted into bed with his significant other. At least, as far as we know.
No, this is a celebration of love, and so it is suitably buoyant, a blend of beat and groove, big guitars, and those oh-so-luscious vocals. Bands such as The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, and plenty of bands that don’t even begin with the letter B are held aloft as being able to do amazing things with their intertwined vocals. Add The Pulltops to that list. Immediately.
