The Pulltops - You Tripped Me Up (self-released)

16 May 2025

It is difficult to say how they do it, but whatever style or genre The Pulltops work in, they instinctively and perfectly understand how to get the most out of that style. And by most, I mean maximum infectiousness, hook, catch, immediacy groove, and every other sonic metric you can measure a great song by.

The part of the musical landscape that they have made their own, and it is definitly there own, is a place where alt-rock energies and indie cool meet and merge, but where also pop contagion is front and centre and other sonic vibes – americana authenticity, yacht rock finesse, even occasional echos of funk and soul sophistication – breeze through.

“You Tripped Me Up,” their latest, is a mid-paced marvel, a blend of raw guitar groove balanced by layers of gossamer textures, a balance of drive and deftness, it sparkles with an 80’s pop-rock sheen but also offers an antidote to all of today’s over-earnest indie rockers who seem to be pointlessly suffereing for their art – put it this way, t“You Tripped Me Up,” is fun! The sort of sonic fun that you can imagine, and I mean this in the most positive of ways, Hall and Oates having with their songs back in the day, and for the longest of times, they were everywhere. Which speaks volumes.

The song might come from a serious place, discussing the fallout after trust is lost in a person, but it is also optimistic, looking for silver linings, talking of moving on and setting your sights on the future rather than the past. Yes, it has some serious things to say, but that doesn’t mean that it has to bring the listener down – in fact, quite the opposite.

What a great band, what a great song, what a great reminder that rock and roll, for want of a better word, is all about having a good time, both for the listener and the music-makers themselves!
